Case Study - Route 281 Logistics

How Coverfleet Helped Route 281 Logistics stop loosing $42,000 annually in insurance costs.

Edinburg, TX

Founded: 2018

Size: 14 Trucks

01 The challenge

Vehicle maintenance and hours of service CSA scores were above the threshold and prevented Route 281 from being accepted into the best insurance programs. They were also most likely to be investigated by FMCSA for having two categories above intervention treshold.

02 The outcome

Reduced over 1,050 hours of log violations per month and a 54% improvement in hours of service CSA score in under 5 months.

Hours of Service CSA 1.92 -> 0.90

Vehicle Maintenance CSA 7.41 -> 6.52

Annual renewal savings $42,000

Tracking progress, reassuring stakeholders and measuring success

Route 281 relied on our predictive models to have a clear outcome on what needed to happen to achieve the desired result in the most efficient manner. The result was a downtrend from their average inspections, even in their best performing months.

Coaching drivers effectively

We first started by understanding why the speeding or log events were happening. We had 1-on-1 conversations with drivers and found opportunities to both increase retention and achieve better safety results. We developed a Driver Safety Contract and Professional Development Plan for poor performing drivers.

Our experience has been that video trainings have very little impact to correcting behavior or increasing retention. On the other hand, we engaged drivers more effectively using a 3-week development plan with multiple touchpoints. This allowed for meaningful change to happen within that timeframe.

We also built trust by listening to drivers needs and wants. A common theme was that Transflow was not easy to use. We migrated fully to Samsara within 2 months and trained each driver on best practices.

We also built trust by equally listening, giving and taking with Route 281 drivers. A common theme was the ease of use of the electronic logging device. We found a suitable solution and migrated fully within 2 months.

By working closely with non-compliant drivers, we helped reduce 1,050 hours of violations per month. The result was 99% of hours of service compliance across the fleet.

“We noticed an 80% increase in adoption from drivers using paper logs in addition to more compliant logs from poor performing drivers.” -

Route 281 Merit Score

We provided meaningful monthly stats on driving behaviors. We noticed the fleet averaged roughly 1,000 miles of safe driving which was good. The target was now to coach drivers that had a lot of frequent unsafe events every 500 miles. By identifying coaching opportunities, we can effectively increase the average of safe miles driven and reduce crash frequency.
